Le vocabulaire lao comprend essentiellement des mots monosyllabiques à tons mélodiques. Les mots polysyllabiques sont empruntésau sanskrit, au pâli, et au khmer.
Le monosyllabe peut être constitué : soit d'une consonne initiale, d'une voyelle et d'un ton, soit d'une consonne initiale, d'une consonne finale, et d'un ton mélodique.

Dès 1943 alors que nous étions à Vientiane, nous avons commencé un travail lexicographique pour approfondir l'étude du laotien. En 1953 nous avons confié au Centre Militaire d'Information de Spécialisation pour l'Outre-Mer notre manuscrit qui a été ronéoté en 5 fascicules totalisant 634 pages. L'édition de 1956 comprend en plus une partie introductive de XXI pages concernant notamment la phonétique laotienne. En 1959 le C.M.I.S.O.M. En a fait une troisième édition, sans d'ailleurs nous en aviser.
Le présent ouvrage est une refonte et un élargissement du premier. Outre que la collection des mots se trouve considérablement augmentée, nous avons apporté des précisions quant à leur prononciation, leur nature, leur fonction, leur place dans l'expression ou la phrase, leur étymologie, leur auteur. Nous avons apporté un soin particulier dans le classement des locutions.
