First edition. This short autobiographical piece provides an interesting insight into Joyce's early literary style, offering a glimpse into his early stages of writing development years before his epics Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. The text itself exemplifies Joyce's literary experimentations and interest in the stream-of-consciousness technique, which is later explored extensively in other texts, to discuss themes of love and desire.
Written in Trieste in 1914, this later publication includes an introduction by Richard Ellmann, exerpts taken from Joyce's textbooks, as well as facsimile plates from the notebook pages, four of which being full full-scale facsimile pages from the manuscript.
