Description:
On 19 September 1994, the Rabaul Volcano in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, erupted for the second time this century, killing five people and devastating the town of Rabaul and many nearby villages. Rabaul Yu Swit Moa Yet gives a fascinating account of this eruption and its aftermath. The book features the experiences of Papua New Guineans, and tells how the local Tolai villagers survived the eruption.  The book also details the historical background of the 1994 eruption, discusses the government’s resettlement schemes and describes the lives of the volcano’s victims in the eighteen months following the eruption. Klaus Neumann first became acquainted with the Tolai when he did research for his PhD in Pacific History.  Between 1986 and 1988, he lived in Lakakua, a village on the Gazelle Peninsula.
