Sage has long been revered by many indigenous cultures for its cleansing and purification properties. The Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Native American tribes have traditionally incorporated sage into spiritual practices and medicine for generations. It originated from Native American tribes in North America as a ceremonial ritual to purify a person or space both physically and spiritually.
For Native Americans, sage is considered sacred medicine. During ceremonies, they purify spaces and participants by burning sage bundles to clear away negativity and unwanted energies. The sweet smoke is believed to remove unwanted energies, thoughts or emotions and make room for positive influences through the power of the smoke and prayer. The process is meant to leave one feeling renewed, revived and balanced after ritualistically cleansing oneself or one's surroundings.
Burning sage forms an integral part of purification rituals before meditation or prayer. Its calming fragrance is said to soothe the mind and spirit. Indigenous healers also used sage steam to detoxify the body and spirit.
