Admiral Graf Spee, commissioned in 1936, was faster than battleships and more powerful in firepower than cruisers. She was also the first German warship to be equipped with a search radar, with a speed of 28.5 knots and two triple mounted 280mm SK C/28 naval guns as the main guns.

During the Spanish Civil War, she was transferred to Spanish waters five times.
