Second edition of a delightful social satire about the English travelling to and along the Rhine. The critic for The Times launched a rather strongly worded attack on this book in his 1850 review, criticising the author's motives in writing for profit (a charge Thackeray happily accepted) and for presenting rather unsavoury characters. Ironically the first edition sold out on review day and this second edition was hastily arranged by the publishers.
