Ledger Art is a term used to describe Plains Indian drawings and paintings on paper from the second half of the nineteenth century (early 1860s forward to early 1900s) because the art was often made on accountant’s ledger books readily available from military outposts. Due to limitations of bone, stick brushes, and earth paints previously use to draw, these items were replaced by colored pencils, crayons and occasionally water color paints.
Plains Indian warriors illustrated battle exploits, brave deeds or those of friends and important acts of personal heroism. The drawings were not often signed and ledger artists were normally anonymous.
