However, if it is set in a ring the setting should encase the whole stone as it has a hardness of about 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and the opal needs to be protected. Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide and is without a crystalline structure which is to say it is amorphous, without a definite chemical composition. This makes opal a mineraloid verses a mineral.
