Drummers and effects units – could opposites attract? With the Walrus Audio DFX-1 Percussion Processing Unit, they certainly can. For recording and performance, Walrus steps up for drummers and percussionists with their high-fidelity effects specifically fitted for rhythm processing – acoustic or otherwise. Classic percussion-friendly effects like compression, delay, reverb, and saturation all align in a workstation-ready form to create and inspire.
For the DFX-1, Walrus called upon percussionist extraordinaire Aaron Sterling for his expertise in recording and percussion effect processing. The DFX-1's motherboard brain is centered around three primary effect engines – compression, delay, and reverb. As you introduce your sound source via a balanced XLR microphone input or ¼" instrument input, you're treated to a blissfully simple setup of effects to be mixed in to taste.
Onboard, we have a compressor with VCA and FET-style models of compression. Its VCA mode emulates the API 2500's signature compression tone with added oomph while its FET mode simulates everyone's favorite 1176 compressor with a quick attack and release for grittier dynamics. Compression threshold and attack and release times are easily shaped with the section's front-facing dials. For added shape and texture to your percussion, the DFX-1 also features dedicated delay and reverb sections. The unit's delay effects can be swapped between "Vintage" and "Modern" modes with a vintage-style, analog, tape-inspired echo with more pronounced degradation and a modern-minded digital delay with clearer repeats, respectively. These delays are matched with two reverb modes capturing splashy spring emulations or shimmery plate ones. Finally, a saturation effect with asymmetrical, tube-like clipping drops in for added harmonic complexity through its dedicated Tilt EQ control accentuating lows or highs.
The DFX-1 builds upon these hi-fi effects with a suite of added features to build up the studio experience. An onboard unbalanced FX loop allows for additional effect units to enter the DFX-1's signal flow while five-pin DIN MIDI in and thrus enable MIDI clock setting and program control. The DFX-1's front-facing panel controls drop in for quick studio control with push-button bypassing of the whole unit, preset cycling from the unit's one hundred and twenty-eight onboard preset bank, and tap tempo control over the delay effect section. Powering this massive motherboard is easy with standard nine-volt DC center negative power operation at 500mA minimum.
For percussionists, studio rats, beatmakers, and anyone else who could stand to liven up their rhythm section, Walrus and their DFX-1 has arrived. And a one, and a two, and a one, two, three, four...
