In a bid for survival the Black Angel, an ark like vessel, takes off with the remainder of humanity tucked up in hyper sleep. In charge are several AI's seeking to be the most efficient care-takers of the humans.
Players take the role of one of these AIs and use dice in a similar way to Troyes. Just like Troyes, you can use anyone's dice, as long as you can pay for them, while you own dice are always free. The colour of the die you choose dictates what actions are available. These generally let you remove damage from the ship, destroy the aggressive Ravagers, upgrade your tech board or even launch a robot out into space on a little mission.
If it sounds like a lot that's because it is, but once you grasp the options of the main and other boards, it all starts to take shape. From wondering how you will achieve your goals at the start of the game you soon start to gel with the connected actions and their repercussions on the rest of your actions.
Perhaps the most visually pleasing aspect of the game is the space board that the Black Angel navigates. Its movement is much like an escalator with the board cleverly moving under the ship rather than the other way around. If you have played the designers lighter take on this, , you will instantly recognise it.
Black Angel is a delightful mash up of mechanics that work together to give you immense satisfaction as you grasp them.
