Also called ki in Hawaiian, this leaf was used to make a cape called kui laI which helped them shelter from the rain and cold. They are considered to be sacred to Lono, the God of fertility, and Laka, the Goddess of Hula. Today, they are believed to bring luck and ward off evil. Each larimar is unique and may vary slightly in color.
