Overview

In 1624 Pope Urban VIII appointed Marcello Sacchetti as depositary general and secret treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber, and Marcello’s brother, Giulio, bishop of Gravina. Two years later, Urban gave Marcello the lucrative lease of the alum mines of Tolfa and raised Giulio to the cardinalate. To assert their new position of socio-political and economic power, the Sacchetti began commissioning works of art. Marcello was responsible for discovering and promoting some of the leading masters of the baroque era, including Pietro da Cortona, Nicolas Poussin, and Simon Vouet, thus playing a key role in defining the artistic trends of the period. His brother, Cardinal Giulio, commissioned works from well-established masters like Guercino and Guido Reni, and purchased a considerable number of works by artists of previous generations. The works the Sacchetti amassed were sold in the eighteenth century to Pope Benedict XIV, who placed them in the Capitoline Museum, Rome, where they now form a substantial portion of the museum’s collection.

This study examines the art patronage of the Sacchetti family in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries in Rome. By focusing on the Sacchetti’s relationship with the artists in their service, it expands our knowledge of the careers of these individuals and points to the complexity of the processes of agency in the fulfillment of commissions. In so doing, it underlines how the Sacchetti used art to proclaim a certain public image and to announce Cardinal Giulio’s candidacy to the papal throne.

Lilian H. Zirpolo has published extensively on Sacchetti family history and art patronage in venues like Architectura, Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Baukunst, Augustinian Studies, The Seventeenth Century, and Gazette des Beaux-Arts. She has taught art history at Rutgers University, Muhlenberg College, Seton Hall University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is co-editor/co-publisher of Aurora: The Journal of the History of Art and, since 1997, president of the WAPACC Organization.

Good quality and cannot beat the value you get with a suit
Size: Medium, Color: Black
I recently purchased the WEEN CHARM Men's Suits Slim Fit for my son's homecoming and I must say, I am impressed with the quality and fit of this suit. Firstly, the material used in this suit is of exceptional quality. The fabric feels soft and smooth, and it has a nice weight to it which gives it a luxurious feel. The suit doesn't feel cheap or flimsy at all. The slim fit design is impeccable. It hugs my son's body in all the right places, giving him a sharp and stylish look. The suit is tailored to perfection and accentuates his physique beautifully. I also appreciate the attention to detail in the craftsmanship. The stitching is neat and sturdy, and there were no loose threads or flaws that I could find. The suit looks like it was made with care and precision. Additionally, the suit was surprisingly comfortable. My son didn't complain about any discomfort or restriction of movement throughout the evening, which is always a plus. The only reason I haven't given it a five-star rating is because the suit did require some minor alterations for a perfect fit. Nonetheless, this is a small inconvenience considering the overall satisfaction we had with this purchase. In conclusion, I highly recommend the WEEN CHARM Men's Suits Slim Fit. It is a stylish, well-made suit that will definitely make a statement at any formal event. My son looked dashing in it and received many compliments.

Fit like a glove and soft to the touch.
Size: Small, Color: Black
My son loved the suit. It was not itchy. The fabric was soft. He did not like the vest but it is because he normally wears baggy clothes. He did not want a slim fit suit but he ended feeling good in it. For the price you can't miss. He is 140 lbs and is 5'7". We used the sizing chart for reference and bought size small. The length and waist of the pants were perfect and the arms were just right.

Size: XX-Large, Color: Black
Complete men's suit for under $70!!! Crazy!! My husband is thrilled with this suit! We ordered a XXXL but it was a bit baggy. Ordered the double XL and it was perfect! Husband is 6'1, waist 38, broad chested. No adjustments or hemming needed! Love it!

Color is not accurate
Size: Medium, Color: Grey
Suit quality is good. This is NOT dark grey. Its a very standard grey when you have it in person. I might return just for this reason as we were really looking for a dark grey suit.
