Inge-Marie is a South African artist, and she has been awarded as a Top 25 Finalist in the ARTi Gallery Art Competition 2023!
About this piece:
Michelangelo is one of my favourite artists of all time. When I was in college many years ago, I painted two of his figures from the Sistine Chapel for a mural commission and when I heard about this competition, it inspired me to take up where I left off and re-imagine one of the Sybils (whom I hadn't painted previously) to paint now in an African interpretation of these very sculptural figures, transporting a beautiful African female into the realms of vibrant pink. Pink is the colour to support my recent recovery from breast cancer.
About the Artist:
Inge was born into a creative family of 5 girls who are all artists, so art has always been constant from an early age.
Obtaining distinctions in art whilst attending Belgravia Art Centre during high school in East London, Inge went on to achieve a distinction in Graphic Design Diploma III from EL Technical College in 1994 and was awarded the Principal’s Award for Top Student over three faculties. The following year she was presented with Best Art Diploma Student in the Eastern Cape Province and a painting was picked for a Merit Award at the annual ABSA L’Atelier Awards from East London.
Now, after more than a 25-year hiatus from painting full time - working overseas and then raising a family in vibrant Cape Town - Inge has finally settled back into the rhythm of creativity and is picking up where she left off. Combining loose brushwork with a more traditional painterly style, Inge’s favourite subject choice is figurative and finds snapshots of her three children as her muse. Although she has been inspired to paint florals, it is not in the traditional sense and tries to explore the boundary between a bit of abstract and graphic in everything traditional.
