The HANG is an ethereal and mesmerising instrument. A deep-sampled Hang Drum/Hand Pan. An instrument that is notoriously difficult to capture in sample form, due to the instrument’s natural sympathetic resonances (when you strike a note, the entire instrument hums a returning resonance that shimmers with the overall sound of the note). We took a painstaking and trailblazing approach to sampling this tricky to capture instrument - After having captured thousands of unique strikes, rolls, harmonics, ghost notes etc... we went through every sample in fine spectral detail to ‘deconstruct’ the fundamentals and upper harmonics of each note struck, isolating them from the surrounding auxiliary ‘sympathetic’ frequencies and mechanical sounds, such as the fingers striking, or the metal clanging. Allowing us to ‘rebuild’ the notes within Kontakt, and keep the purity of the auxiliary sounds, whilst harnessing the now pure harmonic structure of each note to allow us to turn it into a fully chromatic instrument, without the woes and pitching pitfalls prevalent across the board in the sampled Hang Drum landscape.
