Kromme Kareltje, de geliefde piraat uit de Mus & kapitein Kwaadbaard-serie, was niet altijd krom. Als kind heette hij nog gewoon Kareltje en stond hij zo recht als een plank. Samen met zijn ouders woont hij in een woonwagen en trekken ze rond met een bont gezelschap. Zijn beste vriendin Hinkelien en hij zijn onafscheidelijk. Als ze aankomen in een dorp waar iedereen gepest lijkt te worden, besluit het tweetal alles op alles te zetten om daar wat aan te doen.
