In de jaren zeventig ruilde free-jazz musici nachtclubs in voor het circuit van universiteiten, lofts en matinee’s en gaven ze noodgedwongen hun muziek zelf uit op ‘private’ labels. Alhoewel de kwaliteit van leven er niet echt door vooruit ging (voor wie meer wilt weten, Val Wilmer’s As Serious As Your Life is een dikke tip), werd de muziek een stuk compromislozer. Drummer en percussionist Milford Graves was in meerdere opzichten de belichaming van deze ontwikkeling, en Bäbi de kroon op zijn werk. Een extreem heftige en vurige plaat, waarbij het trio van een drummer en twee saxofonisten een intense luistertrip voorschotelen. Met zijn drieën evenaren ze makkelijk andere klassiekers uit het ‘free’ genre - denk aan Coleman’s Free Jazz, Coltrane’s Ascension of Brötzmanns Machine Gun - stuk voor stuk platen met minstens vier keer de hoeveelheid aan personeel. |
