De handelskralen werden oorspronkelijk geproduceerd in Europa, met name in landen zoals VenetiΓ« en Nederland. Ze werden gebruikt als ruilmiddel voor goederen zoals goud en ivoor. Ze werden in Afrikaanse samenlevingen niet alleen gebruikt als sieraden, maar hadden ook symbolische en sociale betekenissen, zoals het markeren van status, rijkdom, of tribale identiteit.
