De zijden bloemen vinden hun oorsprong in Italië, daar draaide men zijden linten ineen totdat het leek op een bloem. Men is natuurlijk gaan zoeken hoe zijden bloemen nog beter hun kleur konden behouden, daarom wordt er nog maar een beetje zijde gebruikt. Er wordt nu veelal gebruik gemaakt van kunstzijde, dat gemaakt wordt van materialen wat afkomstig zijn uit houtpulp. Hierdoor is de kwaliteit van de nep bloem ontzettend hoog en verkleuren de zijdebloemen veel minder dan voorheen.

Zijden bloemen en takken kun je als het nodig is korter maken met een bloemen scherpe tang of snoeischaar.
