Cochin Moon werd een krappe twee maanden voor Yellow Magic Orchestra’s debuut uitgebracht, en is daarmee het eerste volledige synthesizer album uit Hosono’s schatrijke catalogus. Het album was aanvankelijk bedoeld als samenwerking met Tadanori Yokoo, waarbij de Japanners hun fascinatie voor India zouden gebruiken voor een collectie fieldrecordings. Eenmaal aangekomen in India werden ze zo ziek dat ze het hotel niet hebben verlaten. De bijdrage van Yokoo zijn hierdoor beperkt maar niet onbelangrijk; hij maakte de bloedschone voorkant en liet Hosono en Ruichi Sakamoto voor het eerst Kraftwerk horen. Cochin Moon slaagt er in de koortsachtige ervaring van de reis om te zetten naar muziek, waarbij synthesizers, elektronische kikkergeluiden en tabla’s je transporteren naar een fantasierijk India. |
