Louis de Wijze (1922) groeide zorgeloos op in Boxmeer, later in Nijmegen. In oktober 1942, Louis is dan 20 jaar: wordt het Joodse gezin De Wijze door de Duitse bezetter naar het Durchgangslager Westerbork getransporteerd: alleen Louis' oudste zus Ellie weet onder te duiken.

Bijna anderhalf jaar blijft Louis in Westerbork van deportatie "naar het Oosten" gevrijwaard, maar eind maart 1944 wordt ook hij op transport gesteld. Drie dagen later komt hij in Auschwitz aan. Daar begint een onbeschrijfelijke lijdensweg waaraan pas op 23 april 1945 een einde komt wanneer Louis in bevrijd gebied bij de Amerikanen belandt.

Een week daarvoor is hij ontsnapt uit wat later de dodenmars zou gaan heten. Van de 3000 gevangenen van die mars zouden slechts circa 500 de bevrijding meemaken.
