Nefriet is een compacte, vezelige variëteit van het mineraal amfibool en behoort tot de tremoliet-actinoliet serie. Het bestaat voornamelijk uit calcium-magnesium-ijzer-silicaat en staat bekend om zijn uitzonderlijke duurzaamheid, waardoor het historisch gezien veel werd gebruikt voor gereedschappen, sieraden en rituele objecten. Nefriet kristalliseert in het monokliene kristalstelsel, maar komt vrijwel altijd voor in een dicht verweven, vezelige structuur die het een gladde en vaak licht vettige glans geeft.

De kleur van nefriet varieert van wit en lichtgroen tot diepgroen, soms met bruine of zwarte insluitsels afhankelijk van de aanwezigheid van ijzer en andere sporenelementen. De meest gewaardeerde varianten hebben een diepe, egale groene kleur. Belangrijke vindplaatsen van nefriet zijn onder andere China, Nieuw-Zeeland, Canada en Rusland. Nefriet wordt vaak verward met jadeïet, maar het betreft een andere mineraalsoort met een andere chemische samenstelling en kristalstructuur.
