Deel I van deze ‘leerredenen’ is al eerder verschenen in hertaalde vorm onder de titel Troost voor een missend hart. Nu volgt deel 2 als Herstel voor een biddend hart. Met deze andere titel wordt tegelijkertijd het verschil tussen beide delen aangegeven. In deel 1 wordt de gelovige met een ingezonken geloofsleven beschreven, en hem wordt de weg gewezen om aan die gestalte te ontkomen. In deel 2 zet het herstel van deze gelovige in. Dat kan alleen in een weg van gebed. De preken ademen een pastorale wijsheid die weldadig aandoet. Ze zijn heel ontdekkend, maar ook bijzonder vertroostend. Ook in onze tijd zijn deze preken het daarom méér dan waard gelezen en herlezen te worden.
