Als er één vogelsoort is die het verdient om uitgeroepen te worden tot de vogel van Nederland, dan is het de grutto. Maar inmiddels gaat het helemaal niet zo goed met hem; het boerenland is zodanig veranderd dat grutto's daar niet meer kunnen leven. In veertig jaar tijd is twee derde van de grutto's uit Nederland verdwenen. Albert Beintema beschrijft hoe grutto's hun jongen grootbrengen en hoe ze op spectaculaire wijze naar Afrika trekken. Hij laat zien hoe bijzonder deze vogel is en hoe belangrijk hij is als symbool voor de natuur en het cultureel erfgoed. Het is aan ons om te beslissen of wij de grutto willen behouden.
