A modern icon in matte black

The Montblanc Starwalker UltraBlack Doue Fountain Pen channels the collection's spacefaring spirit into a striking, architectonic silhouette. Its contrasting surfaces and darkened metal accents frame the StarWalker signature: a floating Montblanc emblem set above a translucent blue dome that evokes Earth viewed from space. Understated, tactile, and unmistakably contemporary, this UltraBlack Doue edition balances minimalist design with the quiet luxury of fine materials and precise German engineering.

Craftsmanship & Design

Doue denotes a refined pairing of materials, here realized as a matte black precious resin barrel matched to a dark-coated metal cap. The result is a purposeful interplay of sheen and texture that reads as both technical and elegant in the hand. Clean lines guide the eye to the sculptural clip and the StarWalker finial, where Montblanc's white star emblem appears to hover within a transparent dome tinted blue. It is a subtle yet evocative detail that ties the design to the collection's overarching narrative of exploration and perspective.

Every element is carefully considered. The resin's velvety finish offers a confident grip without distracting gloss, while the metal cap introduces a cool, weight-stabilizing counterpoint. Trim and appointments continue the dark theme for a cohesive, monochrome presence that feels crisp rather than heavy. The overall impression is one of disciplined design: modern, spare, and built for daily use without sacrificing refinement.

Writing Experience

At its core, the Starwalker UltraBlack Doue is about line quality and reliability. The pen is fitted with a handcrafted 14k gold nib that has been tuned for consistent ink flow and smooth contact across a range of papers. It delivers a balanced feel with a touch of responsive feedback, rewarding deliberate strokes and long-form writing alike. Available in fine or medium, the nib options suit most handwriting styles, from precise annotation to expressive journaling.

The StarWalker platform favors a cartridge-based system for streamlined practicality. Cartridge filling keeps maintenance simple and travel-friendly, while the pen's geometry supports a centered balance that remains comfortable over extended sessions. The contour of the grip transitions naturally into the nib, encouraging relaxed posture and an unforced pace on the page.

Provenance & Perspective

Introduced as Montblanc's forward-looking design language, StarWalker emphasizes clarity of purpose and a distinctly modern aesthetic. The floating emblem over a blue-tinted dome has become one of the brand's most recognizable contemporary signatures, symbolizing a vantage point that is both expansive and focused. Crafted in Germany, the UltraBlack Doue fountain pen brings that vision into daily writing with the assurance and quiet precision collectors expect from Montblanc.

Essential reading for PowerPoint presenters.
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Cliff shows details how to improve our PowerPoint presentations. He gives concrete and simple steps to transform a message into a targeted presentation. All of us have suffered from presenters who went over their allotted time because they had vital information to give us, yet we still didn't know their main point. Many have seen slide decks burdened with dozens of bullet points. Did the volume of points yield more clarity or did they dull our ability to focus on the message? Probably not. Read Cliff's book. Follow his method and you'll be a more effective presenter.

Useful with some scientific corroboration
Format: Paperback
Worth it as a primer to slide content and how it inter-relates to the delivery when giving a presentation. Very slightly laboured, like most TV documentaries nowadays - you feel they could move a bit faster (...yeah we got it the first time).

Lasting value but degraded presentation
Format: Paperback
I've been a BBP fan since the first edition in 2005. The second edition in 2007 was a significant update and refinement. The latest, 2011 edition, is not worth buying if you already have the second edition -- the information is essentially the same but the 2011 is printed on cheap paper and the contrast between text and background for most of the illustrations is lousy, e.g. black text on a dark grey background, white text on a light grey background. I found it very difficult to read. The online version (O'Reilly Safari Books OnLine) is slightly better because it allows you to magnify the low contrast images which makes them slightly more legible. Thankfully, access to the online version is included with the ink-on-paper book free via a scratch-off, lottery ticket-type insert at the back of the book. If I had to do it again, I'd skip the paper book from Amazon and just purchase electronic access via O'Reilly. This version is more legible and you can print important pages that you might want hard copies of to highlight, mark-up, etc.
