Often clad in rags and patchwork, sometimes donning a mask to appear more fearsome, he carried candy or treats for the obedient children along with switches for those who had been misbehaving. Naughty children were made to do a penance such as recite a Bible verse or poem for forgiveness. Traditionally in Germany, St. Nicholas’ Day is December 6th when St. Nicholas and the Belsnickel visit so that all the children will be ready for Christmas.
