The kaja-kelod axis guides the island’s way of life—kaja meaning “toward the mountains,” and kelod meaning “toward the sea.” In this sacred alignment, Gunung Agung holds a place of profound reverence, its towering presence dictating the rhythm of existence. Beyond its spiritual significance, the volcano nurtures the land itself, influencing the climate and bestowing the surrounding fields with rich volcanic soil. This natural gift allows farmers to harvest rice up to three times a year, transforming the landscape through a shifting palette of vibrant greens and golden hues.
For millennia, generations of Balinese farmers have sculpted the island’s hillsides into cascading terraces, ensuring that rice—viewed as both sustenance and a divine blessing—continues to thrive.
