How Does Red Light Therapy Treat Fat Cells?

We know that red light therapy offers a wide variety of different health benefits, from reducing inflammation and the effects of oxidative stress to boosting the body’s natural healing ability. But what does red light therapy do to fat cells to promote fat reduction?

In addition to boosting your cells with increased ATP production, red light therapy also affects adipocytes, or the cells that store fat. Studies, such as the 2011 study published in Obesity Surgery, show that exposure to red light therapy causes the adipocytes to release triglycerides, resulting in reduced volume and a measurable loss of fat. Participants in this 4-week study experienced a 2.15 cm loss in waist girth.

But the loss of triglycerides is not the only benefit red light therapy provides to patients trying to lose weight and improve body contour.

Studies Show Additional Weight Loss Benefits with Red Light Therapy

Not only can red light therapy help reduce the size of fat cells, thus helping to shape the body contour, but it also provides additional benefits for patients working to lose weight.

A 2012 study published in the International Journal of Endocrinology looked at the effects of light on leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone responsible for controlling appetite, helping to maintain body weight, and regulating how much energy the body burns. In contrast, ghrelin increases appetite and stimulates the release of growth hormone. In this study, researches looked at participants with poor sleep habits. Reduced sleep levels often increase the production on ghrelin while reducing the levels of leptin, often resulting in weight gain.

Their research showed that exposure to red light significantly increased leptin levels while decreasing ghrelin. This reduction in hunger levels can have a great impact on those trying to follow a low-calorie diet for weight loss, helping to reduce hunger and the desire for snacking.

Smaller Waistline, Less Girth: 

A study in the Journal of Obesity Surgery researched red light therapy for body contouring. This 2011 double-blind, randomized study performed light therapy at 635-680 nanometers (nm) on participants for four weeks and recorded effects on the size of their waistline. At the end of the study, participants had achieved a statistically significant reduction in waistline girth.  

Targeted Fat Loss: 

In a similar study published in Lasers in Surgery Medicine, participants who received light therapy showed a significant reduction in overall circumference, including numerous parts of the body. Researchers concluded that light therapy can reduce the circumference of the specific areas of the body that are treated with natural light. 

Tighter Hips & Thighs: 

A 2013 study in the same journal also found benefits from red light therapy at 635 nm for contouring the hips, thighs, and waist. At the end of the trial, researchers found a mean loss of 2.99 inches in overall body size compared to the starting point. Separately, the thigh, waist, and hip areas all showed a reduction too. Researchers concluded that red light therapy at this wavelength was safe and clinically effective 

Less Body Fat:

A 2018 triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed red light therapy’s effects on people doing endurance training. Researchers found pre-exercise treatment can “decrease the body fat in healthy volunteers when compared to placebo.”

In one clinical study, Sixty-seven people who received red light therapy three times a week over a two-week span lost 3.5 inches in their abs, hips, and thighs collectively, compared to than those in the control group who lost less than one inch, according to one randomized double blind study.

Set timer on remote control for 20-30 minutes, choose Red, Infrared or both wavelengths and select power level 1-4 on the controller.

Use every other day for 4-6 weeks and 2X per week after until your desired weight loss goals are achieved.

This book was a game changer for me…

I’ve attempted college twice. On my first attempt I ended up with a 1.8 GPA which resulted in academic probation and a fair amount of tears. Another fun wlw paranormal romance from this author

Another fun wlw urban fantasy, shifter romance. This time we get to know Heather from the first book better along with her fated mate, V. It was nice to have some enby rep in this genre. Always want to see more people represented in characters that I read. Unfortunately the transphobia that was represented was pretty realistic as well. Good to see some familiar faces as well with Wren and Natalie as well as Rias popping up. The romance between Heather and V is instalove, as it is a fated mates situation. However, Heather has a lot of internal demons to battle. I really felt like her struggles were pretty indicative of someone who has experienced trauma from abuse and neglect. Seeing her internal dialogue go back and forth, knowing that she was self-sabotaging, felt very real. Thankfully, V sees her strength hiding behind her struggles and just falls more in love with her. There is no third act breakup. Not really. There is a point where Heather pushes V away, but she is ready to go back to them and work through her struggles when werewolf drama ensues. The ending, seeing Wren's pack grow is great. And there is obvious plotlines introduced at the very end for any upcoming books.

enjoyable werewolf story

It's Heather's turn to be in the spotlight this time, with new character V, in a story that covers mental health, acceptance, and of course finding true love. Finding your true mate can be a wonderful experience, as well as claiming each other, but what follows after can be a challenging experience, especially when other factors in life decide to interfere. Like Pack of Her Own, there is a lot of action in this story, along with lots of cute moments, and Heather and V make a wonderful pair, even with their insecurities. Seeing them stand up for each other is just great as well. Of course seeing Wren and Natalie again was an added bonus, and if there is a third book I'd love to see all of the characters again as well. Mate of Her Own is a highly enjoyable story, engaging and engrossing, and I loved the tale it told. It was good seeing certain aspects of toxic wolf culture being called out, and Wren doing her best to create a pack that doesn't adhere to the norms (especially considering that she didn't want her own pack, but well, with the ending of the previous book, she doesn't have a lot of choice). It is a great shifter tale, and I do hope to see more in this series.
