The double-sided textile and asymmetric cut of this neat little cowl mean that it can be worn in several ways. And, it makes an interesting collar when added to a plain jumper.

Knitted in luxurious, extra-fine merino: lovely and soft next to the skin.

Design

This collection came about from an ideas exchange with Scottish artist Karlyn Sutherland. Inspiration came from her installation in a byre at Latheronwheel in northern Scotland—where she mapped the fall of light.  The Nielanell Byre collection is an interpretation of Karlyn's work in knit, making pieces of wearable art.

Sizing & fit

Sizes available: one size. Like many of our pieces we consider this to be unisex!

  • A (width): 29cm
  • B (height): 28cm

All knitwear is individually made, so measurements given are approximate.

Materials

  • 100% extra-fine merino wool (Oeko-Tex Standard 100)
  • Please note: the sample photographed has a pale blue trim (just seen) - cowls in stock do not have this trim, and are edged with a self colour.

Manufacture

We are committed to sustaining and being part of UK knitwear manufacturing – and Shetland’s place in this.

  • We design Nielanell knitwear in our Hoswick studio, with initial concepts carefully translated into the flat panels needed to make up each piece.
  • Currently, for this garment, we are working with specialist knitters in Mainland UK to make these panels.
  • The garment itself is made in Shetland. Our in-house team in Hoswick transforms the flat panels into a wearable piece of knitwear using linking (a skilled knitting process) and hand-finishing.
  • Our knitwear is made in very small batches, slowly. Each piece of Nielanell knitwear can take approximately 12-16 weeks (often longer) from weighing out the yarn needed in our studio to the garment being ready to wear.
Installation by Karlyn Sutherland, at Latheronwheel, Caithness

Design inspiration

The Byre collection of knitwear takes the glass pieces and drawings made by Karlyn Sutherland, and reinterprets these in knit—both the 'pattern' and the shapes of the garments are related to the installation.

Karlyn Sutherland mapped the fall of light within a historic byre (cattle barn) at Latheronwheel, near Lybster in Caithness.

Karlyn's drawings made on specific days at specific times then became panels of glass, which she hung in the space. Each of these shapes of light are only seen once a year (on a clear day)—the glass becomes a recording and echo of the light.

Drawings of the fall and movement of light, later to be made in glass.

Fun, but fragile
Format: Hardcover
This is a cool book, and my 2.5 year old son LOVES it. However it is important to note that it will be destroyed very quickly. There are lots of flaps and moving parts and it is very easy to accidentally rip them off if you try to move one in a way it's not meant for. I ripped more than 1 myself.

Great for training
Format: Hardcover
I order these for new salespeople and managers who have no construction experience. They think it's a joke until they start going through it.

The Darkness Creates Monsters
Format: Paperback
I really like this dark fantasy comic series. A long time ago, the world turned into darkness. The sun did not shine any more, and anybody who was in the dark for too long turned into a monster. Humans still survive. They drive around and live. The monsters are afraid of light. The artwork is really really good. Monsters and humans are drawn with excellent detail. You can actually see what's going on. The fight scenes are easy to understand. Can't wait to read Volume 2.

Excellent
Format: Paperback
This was one of my favorites. It has great world-building, great characters, an interesting worthy antagonist, and great art. The narrative flows naturally with a good mix of action and character development. We know who everyone is, what they're trying to accomplish, and what the stakes are. We're engaged with it never spins its wheels. I'm a reader, not a collector of singles, so I'm looking forward to vol 2.
