The civil war is, at least to me, deeply familiar, but this book focuses on the personal, and conveys with a painful immediacy the ways that the horror of this conflict infiltrated and transformed the day-to-day existence of our not-so-distant ancestors. I was struck as I have never been before by the degree to which the appalling, unprecedented violence of the conflict was "just around the corner" for familiar and modern-seeming Americans.

Carry on with the great writing Rachel Lacey while I look for my next bodyguard book

( I'm good at hopping from one book to another and forgetting to write one. oopsy) I loved the bodyguard part but as stories go I always hate someone's parent dying. ( too much like real life) I know it's necessary to show why Natalie is so effed up. Rachel wrote a great ending to this story and that is always a plus in my eyes.
