With it's New Zealand rural Gothic/Texas borderlands feel, Mother of Gloom is an elusive creature. Ultimately, the prevalence of acoustic guitar and intimate sharing of lived experience through song suggest it is folk music or, as Fairlight self-deprecatingly calls it, "doom-folk". Her vocal style - a powerful quivering vibrato and a stark, haunting tone, teak-hard yet soft as crushed velvet - elicits comparisons to PJ Harvey, Bridget St John, Emmylou Harris, and Cat Power, musicians with distinctive voices and a lyrical ability to conjure a kind of experiential realism, although Mother of Gloom can also hold it's own alongside the storytelling of Will Oldham and soundscapes of Calexico. Each song is a timelessly elegant, at times distressed, vignette, capturing the essence of a place, memory or feeling, framed by a diverse musical palette with space for the imagination left between the sounds. Fairlight lives in Dunedin and has been composing and performing for over a decade. She recorded Mother of Gloom with Doug Walseth at The Cat's Eye Studio in Austin, Texas on her third trip to the USA, aided by local musicians including Cully Symington (Bright Eyes, Okkervil River) and multi-instrumentalist Kullen Fuchs.

Gentle, hydrating, and perfect for sensitive skin
Iβve been impressed with this cleanser. It creates a soft, rich foam that feels great on the skin, not stripping at all. What I love most is how gentle it is. I used it consistently after a laser treatment, when my skin was especially sensitive, and it never caused any stinging, tightness, or dryness. It left my skin feeling clean, calm, and hydrated every time.
The ingredient list is solid, featuring hyaluronic acid, squalane, and ceramides, which suggests it helps maintain my skin barrier rather than breaking it down, unlike some other foaming cleansers. Itβs also pH-balanced, which I think makes a big difference if youβre using active treatments or have easily irritated skin.
Iβve tried many cleansers over the years, and this is one I can see myself coming back to. Definitely planning to repurchase once I finish the bottle. A great daily cleanser for those seeking a soothing yet effective product.

Love it π₯° Highly recommend
I got this because I had the scented one and its fragrance was too strong for me but I like the cleanser but this one is scent free and I love it.
I do the double cleansing with the oil first then this product and the really help keep my skin feel protected and soft. So gas as the foaming I use less than a dime maybe a quarter the size of a dime and get great foaming. Definitely add the soup first then some water to get the foaminess. Since I started using this cleanser I feel the effects are not hearsay or stripping.
Pros: Scent free, requires small amount for a good cleansing and leave you feeling soft yet cleaned and ready for your next step like toner or witch hazel.
Cons: None for now.
I really like this product and recommend to anyone who needs a good scent free cleanser

Dry skin+ psoriasis friendly
My partner has dry skins and psoriasis and this is his go to face wash. When he runs out he grumbles about having to use mine. Makes his face feel clean without over drying or agitating it.
