Cerium (Ce) is one of the rare earth elements with extremely abundant reserves and low cost. Due to its unique 4f electronic structure, cerium has been widely used in various fields such as alloys, fluorescence, magnetism, and catalysis in recent years. Correspondingly, its oxide cerium dioxide (light yellow powder) has also attracted great attention. The crystal structure of CeO2 is a cubic fluorite structure, in which the metal cation (Ce4+) is arranged according to a face centered cubic lattice, while the anion (O2-) is located at the center of the tetrahedron. Ce element usually contains two oxidation states, Ce4+and Ce3+. When the temperature is high or in a reducing environment, it can be reduced to CeO2-x (0<x ¡ãC0.5), resulting in rapid and reversible conversion between the two valence states. Therefore, oxygen vacancy defects are easily present in the lattice of CeO2-x. Due to its inherent oxide defects and excellent redox performance and oxygen storage capacity, CeO2 nanoparticles are commonly used as active oxide carriers for multiphase catalysts or catalysts.
