Nanocellulose solution is usually a milky white liquid with good dispersibility and stability.

The diameter of cellulose fibers is usually between 15-25 nanometers, and the length can reach 200-300 nanometers, which makes nanocellulose solutions have extremely high specific surface area and surface activity. The properties of nanocellulose solutions depend on factors such as the type, concentration, surface chemical properties, and solvent of nanocellulose. Generally speaking, nanocellulose solutions have a certain viscosity, and the viscosity increases with the increase of nanocellulose concentration. When the concentration of nanocellulose is low, the solution exhibits characteristics similar to Newtonian fluids; When the concentration is high, the solution may exhibit non Newtonian fluid characteristics, such as shear thinning.

The stability of nanocellulose solution is also an important property. By appropriate surface chemical modification or adding stabilizers, the stability of nanocellulose solutions can be improved to prevent aggregation and precipitation of nanocellulose. For example, adding some surfactants or polymers to nanocellulose solutions can improve the stability of the solution through electrostatic repulsion or steric hindrance. Nanocellulose is mainly treated with chemical reagents to decompose cellulose into nanocellulose. Among them, acid hydrolysis is a commonly used chemical method, usually using sulfuric acid to hydrolyze cellulose. Under certain temperature and time conditions, the amorphous region of cellulose is hydrolyzed while the crystalline region remains, forming cellulose nanocrystals. The cellulose nanocrystals prepared by this method have high crystallinity, but require acid recovery and treatment to reduce environmental pollution.

Application Fields

Preparation of new nanomaterials: Nanocellulose can also be used as a nanoscale raw material to further chemically/physically modify and prepare new nanomaterials with special properties.

Biocompatible materials: Nanocellulose theoretically has good biocompatibility and degradability, making it suitable for the preparation of biomedical materials such as tissue engineering scaffolds and drug carriers.

Antibacterial materials: Nanocellulose surfaces can be loaded with antibacterial agents to prepare composite materials with antibacterial functions, which are used in fields such as medical devices and wound dressings.

Water treatment: Nanocellulose can be used to adsorb harmful substances such as heavy metal ions and organic pollutants in water, improving water treatment efficiency.

Soil remediation: Nanocellulose can be used as a soil amendment to increase soil water retention and permeability, and promote plant growth.

Reinforced fibers: Nanocellulose can be used as a reinforcing agent for textile fibers to improve the strength and wear resistance of textiles.

The sample can be stable for a long time (several months) and cannot be dissolved in water after

freeze-drying.

In the test of TEM, it is suggested that the samples should be treated with negative staining before

testing. The method of preparing negative stained sample to test transmission electron microscopy is

as follows.

1. Dilute the nanocellulose dispersion to 0.1% to 0.5%.

2. Prepare the phosphotungstic acid solution (wt%=3%).

3. Immerse the copper mesh in the diluted nano-cellulose sample solution for 2-3 s. Take out copper

mesh and dry it at room temperature for 3 h.

4. Immerse the copper mesh with sample in 3% phosphotungstic acid solution for 2-3s.Take out

copper mesh and dry it at room temperature for 3 h. After that, it should be placed at 80 ℃ for 1 hour

to prevent the water from not being exhausted.


Nanocellulose should be refrigerated at 4 ¡ãC If stored for a long time at room temperature, it will

deteriorate (color turns red).
