In this little gem of a book Leon Hale reacquaints us with the back road individualists who have given Texas much of its character over the past century.A novelist and columnist for fifty years, Hale has built his reputation on an exceptionally smooth writing style combined with a sharp eye for what's unusual and remarkable hidden among the otherwise ordinary people and places of Texas, for example, the alligator that slept by the stove at Scheller's Place; the ghost of Fiddler's Island; or the billboard newspaper of Tillie Roome.
Turn South at the Second Bridge chronicles a world that abounds with surprises. Check out Virge Whitfield, who combined wisdom with a limitless love of dogs; or Pat Craddock, whose skill at cooking whiskey cost him a leg; or Jack Hillhouse, the one-armed giant beach-dweller who had an unusual way of obtaining fresh eggs. Hale takes us along with him, down winter beaches from Galveston to Port Aransas, deep into the Piney Woods of East Texas, through the bottom lands of the Trinity, the Brazos, and the Colorado Rivers, as he searches for the unique characters who inhabit the part of Texas you don't find in guide books.
Many of the places and most of the people chronicled in this delightful Texas classic have vanished by now, and we are the poorer for it. Fortunately for us, however, Hale has captured with warm affection the language and spirit of this memorable part of his state's social and oral history, in the shape of stories and characters you won't forget.

Good, but you sacrifice a few things in favor of style
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10, Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10
It’s much better than other shoes out there, but the design is slightly confusing. The first thing you have to know is that the shoe won’t be mind blowingly soft, but it is around as comfortable as standing on something like vans shoes. The holes on top are both a plus and a minus, when you step in a puddle, your feet get instantly soaked, but just by walking around for a bit, they dry up again. Then these holes reduce the structural integrity of the shoe, so I expect the top to be the first part of the shoe that deteriorates, when usually for all my other shoes, it’s the sole that falls off first. With the holes, you can’t shine them the traditional way, you have to be more careful as you might get goo into the inside fiber. Finally you can’t run in these, they’re larger than your foot which is quite comfortable while just standing or walking, but I’m sure they’ll tear if you don’t watch your footing. If all that is okay with you, You’ll get quite a few compliments on it as you walk around, because these are beautiful and excellent as a dress shoe/loafer hybrid

Great gift for any guy!
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 12
These are one of 2 pairs of work shoes my husband will wear, the other one is the same shoe in brown. He says they’re the comfiest pair of dress shoes he’s ever had and the quality and ease of cleaning is incredible. They’ve lasted him years now so I’d say they’re well worth the money.
