Tahmineh Javanbakht has always been r drawn to feminine symbology—fertile natural landscapes, feminine silhouettes, sensuous shadows, her mother's rose garden, flowers, birds, and butterflies. Tahmineh employs colored-hued mirrors as her medium to create collages focusing on the concept of reflections, the desire for a renewed future while honoring the allure of traditionalism. Born in Iran before the Islamic revolution, she emigrated to the United States at sixteen. Her tactile and visual memories of her Persian heritage remain deeply felt, as evidenced in her beautifully detailed mirror paintings and assemblages. These works reflect both the cultural richness of her background and her ongoing commitment to keeping the women of Iran in the forefront of the collective consciousness. Like many immigrants, she confronts and honors her history by paying homage to fragments of her childhood recollections. This process helps her understand and integrate her dual identities, serving as a conduit to express her fascination with the intricacies of Persian art and her love for her childhood home, Isfahan.
She says, "I think John Dewey best explains how I feel when he wrote that elements from past experiences give suggestiveness and body to a work of art, saying that they often come from sources too obscure to be identified in any conscious memorial way, and thus they create the aura and penumbra in which a work of art swims. Growing up in Isfahan, Iran, and my current home, Los Angeles, universal similarities are evidenced in details of my paintings, drawings, and sculptures."
Tahmineh Javanbakht is the co-founder of Artecnica, a Los Angeles-based firm whose designs have been included in collections at MOMA-NY, LACMA, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She has also taught experimental painting at her alma mater, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
