Good is the debut album by Boston trio Morphine, originally released in 1992 on the Accurate/Distortion label and reissued by Rykodisc in 1993 following the band’s signing with the label. The album introduced the group’s singular configuration of Mark Sandman’s two-string slide bass, Dana Colley’s baritone saxophone, and Jerome Deupree’s drums—a minimalist lineup that yielded a surprisingly full and hypnotic sound.
Musically, Good set the template for Morphine’s future work: smoky, low-slung grooves that straddled alternative rock, blues, and jazz. The band’s moody restraint and noir-like lyricism evoked beat poetry and late-night cool rather than the distortion of their contemporaries. Songs drift between languid and propulsive, grounded in Sandman’s deep vocals and Colley’s expressive saxophone, creating a sound both sultry and unsettling.
Critics recognized Good as an impressive debut and an early sign of Morphine’s originality. Trouser Press praised its “slippery, sultry groove” and open production, while AllMusic noted that the album “did a splendid job of introducing the Boston trio’s highly original sound,” describing it as music “geared more toward the jazz scene” than to standard alternative rock. Good remains an essential first statement from one of the 1990s’ most distinctive bands.
