Symboliek en achtergrond

De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 1 juli 1971. De zwarte driehoek toont het sterrenbeeld Zuiderkruis, een herkenbaar symbool op vlaggen in Oceanië. De rode driehoek bevat een gestileerde gele paradijsvogel, die staat voor onafhankelijkheid en nationale identiteit. Zwart en rood zijn traditionele kleuren van veel inheemse stammen.
