Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Brussels, Belgium, Bob Danhieux Douglas developed an early awareness of cultural duality, growing up bilingual and between differing worldviews. Before dedicating himself fully to art, he served for seven years in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman and later as a computer and laser repair technician, leaving military service honorably with the rank of Sergeant.
Bob later built a career in Silicon Valley as a hardware engineer for companies including Sun Microsystems and Oracle, contributing to teams working on emerging technologies during a transformative era in computing. Following profound hearing loss and a major shift in life direction, he turned increasingly toward painting as both inquiry and refuge.
A self-taught artist working from Hilo, Hawaii, Bob creates abstract works rooted in automatism, metaphorical mark-making, and emotional resonance. His work explores tension between darkness and hope, structure and impermanence. His practice is further informed by the philosophy of wabi-sabi and by his study with mentor and sensei Hiroki Morinoue, which led him to embrace Mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing.
Bobโs paintings and prints invite contemplation rather than explanation, allowing viewers to encounter their own emotional associations within layered surfaces and gestural forms. He exhibits internationally, including in Shanghai, and serves as a board member of the Hawaii Island Art Alliance. His work has received numerous awards and is held in private collections across multiple continents.
